Semyon Faibisovich
Short link: http://allbrum.com/12958
Faibisovich, a Russian artist hailing from the same generation as Ilya Kabakov and Erik Bulatov, has returned to painting with a vengeance. He translates images of everyday street life, captured by mobile phone, into pixellated colours on canvas. Their abstracted beauty belies a poverty that characterises most of modern Russia as it slips back, according to the artist, into a Soviet system. There is a sad nobility in the faces of the tram passengers he depicts, subjects of yet another failed political experiment.
